Patents, Folks

(Anonymous)
Pretty amazing that no one has brought up the patent space issue. Secure Computing claims patents over SELinx, even though NSA funded the development (it should really be public domain because of this). RedHat pays royalties related to SELinux directly to Secure Computing. It's actually pretty smart of Novell to have an alternative that provides similiar functionality; the ability to direct themselves around the current patent minefield. Most people forget many of these decisions revolve around money and legal issues, not necessarily 'what is best for everyone'. IBM has to do this quite frequently to avoid legal prosecution over stupid stuff when dealing with Linux. Remember, litigation is becoming a new business model, and costs money whether or not you are guilty or you win.
